Amanda Berry is an American woman who gained international attention after escaping from a decade of captivity in Cleveland, Ohio. She, along with two other women, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight, were kidnapped by Ariel Castro. The three women were held captive in Castro's home on Seymour Avenue.
Amanda Berry was abducted on April 21, 2003, the day before her 17th birthday, while on her way home from work. During her captivity, she gave birth to a daughter, who was also held in the house.
On May 6, 2013, Berry managed to escape with the help of Castro’s neighbors. She alerted the neighbors by shouting from behind a closed door, and one of them, Charles Ramsey, helped her break free. After escaping, Berry called 911, leading to the rescue of the other captives and the arrest of Ariel Castro.
Ariel Castro was subsequently sentenced to life in prison plus 1,000 years after pleading guilty to 937 counts, including kidnapping and rape. Castro died by suicide in prison in September 2013.
Since her escape, Amanda Berry has worked on rebuilding her life, participating in advocacy work to help find missing persons and sharing her story to raise awareness about issues related to abduction and captivity.
